South Asians Diabetes Educational Sessions

Prevention of type 2 diabetes: Through a cultural lens:
The primary goal of these sessions are to increase awareness about diabetes in the South Asians for taking preventive actions among their eating habits. Thorncliffe Park is known as a hub of new immigrants coming from South Asia. Seventy five percentage of Thorncliffe Park population are South Asians. In partnership with Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA), One Voice Canada is offering culturally-relevant and language-specific diabetes prevention workshops tailored made to the South Asian communities lifestyle.
Session are conducted by Dr. Tariq Mirza, he is an experienced International Medical Graduate, with Post-graduate Diploma in Diabetology, and he is also associated with the Canadian Diabetes Association
Participants who attend are learning about:
- Tips and benefits of blood sugar monitoring
- Recognizing the signs and symptoms of high and low blood sugars
- Getting active and include exercise as part of your healthy lifestyle
- Meal and snack planning for blood sugar control
- Healthy eating with diabetes
- Blood glucose monitoring and control
- Benefits of keeping active
- Adopting a healthy lifestyle
- Reading food labels and grocery shopping tours
